LGBT women change, move, and inspire our nation every single day. With the recent legalization of marriage for all Americans, regardless of orientation, it is time to turn our attention to the many subtle and malicious ways in which LGBT individuals suffer discrimination, from cyber bullying to hiring practices. However, the LGBT community cannot rely on allies to relay their right to equality— they must step into the arena as elected officials and demand their civil liberties. Their unique experiences bring a powerful point of view to not only the fight for civil rights, but a variety of policy issues, and the LGBT community has a rich history of activism and civic engagement, making it a prime recruitment pool for progressive political candidates.
